The Kansas City Current are deep into a September that matters. Sitting in playoff contention in the NWSL standings, the club opened the month with a cross-country trip to face Bay FC — a road test that kicked off a stretch of games that could define where Kansas City lands when the regular season wraps.

Where things stand

The Current have built their season on a mix of established talent and rising performers, with forward Temwa Chawinga and midfielder Bethune both landing on national top-player rankings this month — a reflection of the individual quality driving the team’s playoff push. Kansas City has also cracked the top tier of global club power rankings, a notable marker for a franchise still relatively young compared to some of its NWSL peers.

Roster moves reinforcing the push

The club added defender Maëva Nyadjou, fresh off helping Cameroon win the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, where she was named Best Young Player and selected to the tournament’s Best XI. Bringing in an international-caliber defender at this point in the season signals a front office serious about shoring up depth for a playoff run rather than coasting into the offseason.

A national stage moment

Defender Izzy Rodriguez added another highlight to the club’s season by winning a national fan-voted impact award, which came with a $10,000 donation to her chosen community partner — a reminder that the Current’s growing profile extends beyond the scoreline.

Why it matters for Kansas City sports fans

With the Chiefs and Royals traditionally dominating the city’s sports conversation, the Current’s rise gives KC a genuine third team worth building a fall schedule around. A deep playoff run would only add to a case that’s been building for a few seasons now: Kansas City is a serious women’s soccer market, not just a football town with a soccer team attached.
