Kansas Speedway hosted the fourth race of NASCAR’s 2026 Cup Series playoffs on September 27, and Hendrick Motorsports driver Kyle Larson came out on top at the Hollywood Casino 400 — his second win of the season, securing bragging rights at one of the circuit’s most consistent playoff stops.

A playoff format Kansas City hasn’t seen in over a decade

This year’s race carried extra significance beyond the usual playoff stakes. After 12 years of NASCAR’s knockout-style Championship 4 format, the series returned to a version of the “Chase” structure used from 2004 to 2013 — a single 10-race postseason round built around the 16 drivers who finished the regular season in the top 16 of points, rather than a series of elimination rounds. For longtime NASCAR fans in the Kansas City area, it was a genuine blast from the past rather than another tweak to a system they’d only recently learned.

A weather-disrupted build-up

Getting to race day wasn’t entirely smooth. Rain wiped out practice and qualifying ahead of the Hollywood Casino 400, forcing NASCAR to set the starting lineup using its metric-based formula instead — a combination of practice speed, prior finishes, and points position. That system ended up working against some of the sport’s bigger names: Ryan Blaney and Chase Briscoe, both coming off rough finishes at the prior Bristol race, found themselves starting well back in the field as a result.

Where the points race stands now

With Larson’s win, he moved into the championship points lead heading into the next playoff stop, trailed closely by Denny Hamlin, Christopher Bell, and Joey Logano rounding out a tightly packed top four. With several playoff races still remaining, the margins separating the leading contenders remain thin enough that any given Sunday could meaningfully reshuffle the standings.

Why Kansas Speedway keeps earning playoff dates

The 1.5-mile oval in Kansas City, Kansas has built a reputation as a venue that consistently produces competitive, closely contested racing — part of why it’s continued to hold a spot on NASCAR’s playoff schedule even as other tracks have rotated in and out. For a metro that doesn’t always get top billing on national sports calendars, a playoff-round Cup Series race is a genuine point of pride, drawing fans from well outside the immediate Kansas City area.

What’s next

With Kansas Speedway’s 2026 Cup Series dates now behind it, the playoff field heads to Las Vegas Motor Speedway for the next round — leaving Kansas City racing fans to spend the next several weeks watching from a distance as the championship picture continues taking shape.
