Leaf season is arriving in Kansas City. According to a state-by-state foliage tracker cited by IN Kansas City Magazine, colors should begin showing in the metro by October 15 and peak during the first week of November. Local conditions matter, though: the Missouri Department of Conservation has noted that a heavy mimosa webworm infestation on honey locusts left some stretches prematurely brown this year.

Seven places to go

  • Cliff Drive Scenic Byway: A little over four miles through Kessler Park in Northeast Kansas City, with reds, oranges, and yellows among limestone cliffs and fountains. The road is closed to vehicles, so it’s ideal on foot, and pedicab rides are available.
  • Loose Park: At 75 acres, the park’s oaks, maples, and weeping willows glow above its walking paths. It’s an easy add-on if you’re visiting the Plaza.
  • Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art: The Donald J. Hall Sculpture Park is especially striking just after peak, when ginkgo trees turn yellow and drop leaves onto the paths.
  • Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens: More than 1,700 species fill 300 acres, offering a quiet escape from the city.
  • Powell Gardens: East of Lee’s Summit, the gardens and surrounding woods offer color from the drive onward, including bald cypresses and Japanese maples.
  • Shawnee Mission Park: This 1,700-plus-acre park has hiking trails and a lake that creates reflections of the foliage.
  • Ward Parkway: For an easy drive, cruise between 55th Street and Gregory Boulevard.

Tips for leaf-peeping

  • Go early and often, since conditions can change quickly.
  • Weekdays and mornings tend to be quieter.
  • After this week’s storms, check for closures or debris on trails and roads.

The takeaway

Fall color in Kansas City lasts about three weeks, so there’s still plenty of time to plan a visit.
